The much-requested feature, which was always available in Windows 10 and earlier, sets to make a return in a future update.

Microsoft took its staple feature Taskbar and given it a complete redesign in Windows 11, however, it wasn’t well received with many features dropped from Windows 10 – including resizing, moving, and one of them is taskbar labels. The company is said to be adding these features back down the line – but for now, it’s the taskbar labels feature that is currently undergoing testing on the Windows 11 preview build.

By default since Windows 7, all taskbar icons have its labels (essentially the name of the app) hidden. However, users can always re-enable it back through taskbar settings, and the option largely stayed the same across three major versions of Windows (7, 8 and 10). Windows 11’s lack of such feature has made navigating through multiple windows more difficult than it should be, as now you have to click through multiple parts in order to access that particular window. On the contrary, having a taskbar label directly visible makes it easier for users to switch windows and even rearrange them.

According to the tweet by Albacore (@thebookisclosed), the new look pretty much reverts the old look seen in previous Windows versions, though there seems to be a small difference. Windows 11 uses a small dot (or pill) under the app icon to indicate whether the app is running or in foreground, and here we can see File Explorer have its label visible despite the app seemingly not in use. Previous versions of Windows will only show labels when the app is opened and running. Interestingly, each labels have different lengths (to fit just the text), so OCD users – apologies about that.

We assume this may just be a developmental oversight – remember, this is still on a preview build of Windows. Many things will change here, so what you see by the time this features makes it into stable release may behave slightly differently than what is presented here.
