Bombshell: Bing Search May Replace Google On Samsung Galaxy Smartphones
How the turntables.
Ever since ChatGPT gets integrated into Microsoft’s Bing search, Google has been on high alert company-wide to deal with what is likely its biggest existential threat in many years (the company declared ‘Code Red’ internally). The GPT-4 model is powerful enough for Samsung to consider dropping Google search in favor of Microsoft’s Bing instead.
According to report from New York Times, Samsung is considering dropping Google as its default search engine in its devices. Google Search widget is one of the most prominent elements on any Android device’s home screen, so it’s one of the things that Google will not want to lose against its biggest competitor. According to internal conversations, the company apparently responded to the news with “panic” while both companies are negotiating for a new deal.
The potential losses for Google will be huge – according to previous estimates when Apple dropped Google in favor of Bing (and has since returned in 2017), the contract is said to worth up to $20 billion, and just like Samsung, the contract is also up in the air this year. Since the rise of ChatGPT, Google has been scrambling with the new Bard chatbot to put up a fight, though its efforts are ineffective due to various high-profile mishaps with the chatbot.
This situation is likely worsened for Google as Samsung has been increasingly collaborative with Microsoft on the software side of things. Both companies started small from pre-loaded Microsoft Office apps many years ago, to much more integrated features like Phone Link, OneDrive, and with the Bing chatbot, the ties is likely going deeper between the Windows giant and South Korea’s Android giant.
