Google is reportedly building a completely new AI-powered search engine from the ground up, as the company is scrambling to fend off ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Microsoft from hurting its search engine business. Per The New York Times, this new engine will aim for a more personalized search experience by anticipating what users may search next. There’s no timeline set just yet, though: in the meantime, there’s “Project Magi” – a similar AI-based approach designed to fit within its current search engine.

The company has assigned over 160 employees for the redesign, and it includes a chatbot that solves engineering and programming questions (which generates code snippets). There’s also the music searching feature through chatbot conversation. Other features include “Searchalong” – which lets the chatbot reads whatever’s on page to provide contextual information. Aside from that, “GIFI”, an image generator, and “Tivoli Tutor”, a language-teaching chatbot, are also in the works.

Report claims that Google may announce Project Magi next month, with new features expected this fall, which should align with the upcoming Google I/O 2023 event. Availability will be first limited to 1 million users in the US before expanding to 30 million by the end of 2023.
