RIP YouTube Stories: The Snapchat-Lookalike Feature Shuts Down On June 26th

That’s one more for the infamous Google graveyard.

RIP YouTube Stories: The Snapchat-Lookalike Feature Shuts Down On June 26th

When the short, limited-time form of content was all the crazy some few years ago – which was first popularized by Snapchat – other major social media companies has since added their own flavors of the same feature into their platforms. Instagram is considered the most successful with the Stories feature, so much so that Snapchat has been squeezed out of the competition. YouTube had a go at it too (which originally was named ‘Reels’ back in 2017), with the 7-day expiration date instead of 24 hours.

However that craze has since cooled off, or rather, overtaken by another big thing that is short videos (courtesy of TikTok). The YouTube Shorts has been a relative success, so that leaves little reason for the Google subsidiary to keep the Stories feature as it remained underutilized. In the blog post, Google says the feature will be shut down past June 26th, 2023 and all content made using the feature will expire 7 days after that.

Some of the features from Stories will be carried over to Community Posts, however. As the company says the recently-expanded feature “drives many times more comments and likes compared to Stories”, and still offers expiration limit of 24 hours if required. Creators can still post polls and images like usual.

Pokdepinion: Inevitable – I’m pretty sure since Shorts is a thing I haven’t seen anyone using Stories anymore.
