Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) launched the new VW Golf R (Mk8.5) in Malaysia, and uniquely for the Malaysian market, this hot hatch will be locally assembled at the Volkswagen plant in Pekan, Pahang, making Malaysia the only country outside VW’s homeland in Germany to produce the Golf R domestically.

The new Mk8.5 model represents the most powerful production Golf offered in Malaysia to date, powered by an uprated 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged inline-4 “EA888” engine now producing 333PS (245kW, 328hp) and 420Nm of torque, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG transmission – pair that with VW’s 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system and acceleration from 0 to 100km/h is done within 4.6 seconds. For the handling aspect, the R Performance Torque Vectoring distributing torque variably between the rear wheels for cornering control. Drive modes include Comfort, Sport, Race, Drift, and Individual.
On the outside, the new Golf R receives a revised front bumper with an illuminated VW logo, R-specific side skirts, a rear spoiler, and a rear bumper housing the R Performance titanium quad exhaust system from Akrapovic. The car rides on 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels and features IQ.Light LED matrix headlights with a redesigned 3D LED rear light cluster and dynamic turn signals. For model year 2026, Dolphin Grey is the new color option on top of existing choices comprising Lapiz Blue, Grenadilla Black, and Pure White.
The cabin features a 12.9-inch tablet-style infotainment display running the MIB4 operating system, a 10-inch Digital Cockpit Pro dashboard display, and an enhanced IDA voice assistant; Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless smartphone charging are included. Interior R-specific elements include Nappa leather upholstery with R logo embossing on front seats, carbon grey trim inserts, a leather-wrapped haptic sports steering wheel, and brushed stainless steel pedals, while audio is courtesy of a 480W Harman Kardon 9-speaker system with a 12-channel amplifier and subwoofer.
The Golf R includes the IQ.Drive driver assistance suite, covering Park Distance Control (front and rear), Adaptive Cruise Control with stop-and-go, Front Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking (including pedestrian and cyclist detection), Lane Assist, Side Assist, and a proactive passenger protection system.
Volkswagen says the new Golf R is priced from RM337,790. With the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP) (covering five years of free maintenance, a five-year mileage warranty, and five years of roadside assistance), the price starts from RM355,990. The vehicle is available at authorized Volkswagen dealerships nationwide and at Volkswagen’s local website.
