Hong Leong Bank has expanded its cross-border payment ecosystem by integrating Alipay+ through Payments Network Malaysia (PayNet), making HLB Connect one of the most comprehensive single-app QR payment solutions for Malaysian travelers. The Alipay+ integration adds to an already broad network of overseas payment options available directly within the HLB Connect app, without requiring users to download additional apps or top up separate e-wallets.

Payments via Alipay+ are processed instantly and funded directly from the customer’s MYR banking account. The addition builds on PayNet’s existing bilateral linkages to national QR networks across ASEAN, covering Singapore’s NETS, Thailand’s PromptPay, Indonesia’s QRIS, and Cambodia’s Bakong.

HLB Connect Cross-Border QR Payment Network Coverage

Alongside the new Alipay+ support, HLB Connect already provides connectivity through UnionPay International (UPI) and Weixin Pay, giving customers access to over 120 million QR-enabled merchants across China, Hong Kong, Macao, and Thailand. Combined with the ASEAN linkages via PayNet, this positions HLB Connect as one of the widest-reaching cross-border QR payment platforms offered by a Malaysian bank.

Depending on the network and participating merchant, customers can either scan a merchant’s QR code or present their HLB QR Pay code for the merchant to scan. Beyond QR payments, customers can also link eligible HLB cards to Weixin Pay, or use Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay for contactless payments abroad.

Kevin Lam, HLB’s Group Managing Director and CEO, said: “When customers travel, they want to know they can pay easily and with confidence. Bringing these networks together gives them more places to pay through HLB Connect, alongside the cards and other payment options they already use. Our cross-border partners help us make this possible by connecting our customers to the continuously expanding payment networks that merchants use in their markets and countries.”
