Games stuck at 60fps even with V-Sync OFF? Check this out.
I own a Lenovo Y50. Not a super-fast gaming laptop, but the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M in it should suffice for most casual games like DOTA 2 or CS:GO, right? Well then why was I stuck at 60 frames per second in every game running in fullscreen and borderless windowed mode? V-sync was off in both the game settings and also NVIDIA Control Panel, but I was still stuck at 60fps, with serious input delay in both DOTA 2 and CS:GO. Imagine playing CS:GO with input delay. True horror. But the games were running at the appropriate frame rates when I changed to windowed mode. Obviously something was wrong.
After a lot of Google-ing, I still could not find the solution to my issue. My keywords were “CS:GO stuck at 60fps” “Steam games stuck at 60fps” “Fullscreen stuck at 60fps”. Finally, as a last ditch effort, I blamed Windows 10. Bingo. Apparently, it’s the pre-installed Xbox app’s Game DVR which forced the games to run at a peasantly pace of 60 fps even when my hardware was capable of more. Disabling it immediately yielded results. My games were no longer stuck at 60fps even with V-Sync off.
The steps to disable the Xbox Game DVR is:
- Open the Xbox app.
- Go to Settings (it’s the little gear on the left edge)
- Switch to the Game DVR tab.
- Click on slider to turn it off.
That’s all you need to do to get the frame rates you paid for. Or you can also uninstall the Xbox app if you wish.
holyshit thank you so much! going nutz over dis shit!
