Here’s FIVE tips to help you win up to USD 20 000 with the HUAWEI P30 Pro

We have previously shared about the HUAWEI P30 Series camera capabilities. So how can you put them to good use? From now until 31st July 2019, HUAWEI’s NEXT Image Awards 2019 gives you the chance to win yourself up to USD 20 000 (~RM82,650) and other prizes including a HUAWEI P30 Pro, HUAWEI Watch GT and more. HUAWEI is accepting submissions in the following categories.

The categories are as follows:

  • Faces – Experimenting with identity and the power of portraiture
  • Going the Distance – Discovering new places and new experiences by using new features of the smartphone camera, for instance tele-lens, super wide angle or macro-shooting
  • Hello, Life! – Sharing the emotion or the inspiration in everyday experiences
  • Storyboard – Telling a story in 9 frames, a grid of photos that develop a meaning or intriguing narrative
  • #Emotion Tag – Expressing instant emotions by means of photography
  • Life Now – Filming stories in less than 30 seconds

You can even submit the same photographs into multiple categories if you feel that your shot doesn’t just fit into one category. And of course, we have here some tips and tricks to help you score that sweet loot from HUAWEI’s NEXT Image Awards 2019.

Let HUAWEI Master AI take the reins

HUAWEI’s new SuperSpectrum sensor allows you to capture up to 40% more light thanks to a new RYYB color filter. In addition to that, HUAWEI has optimized the software powering the camera, promising amazing shots, even in low light conditions. You don’t even need to mess with any settings.

Sunset shots are really challenging, due to the intensity of the colors in the sky demanding a really wide dynamic range to even be able to capture the shot properly. But as you can see in the shot above, the HUAWEI P30 Pro handled the scene well with excellent details.

This shot is eligible for the following categories: Going the Distance, Hello, Life! and #Emotion Tag.

Another barrier which HUAWEI has transcended with the HUAWEI P30 Pro is the fact that you no longer need to manually enter a dedicated Night mode to take awesome low light shots. This photo was taken at night with the auto mode, and the shot turned out perfect with a little help from the AI engine in the HUAWEI P30 Pro.

Zoom away!

Here’s FIVE tips to help you win up to USD 20 000 with the HUAWEI P30 Pro - 23

The HUAWEI P30 Pro is set to replace your run-of-the-mill travel superzoom with its innovative triple camera setup offering an ultra-wide 16mm (35mm equivalent) focal length and a whopping 50x zoom capabilities. Despite the mind-blowing range, the HUAWEI P30 Pro fits right into your pocket, with a periscope lens design making it possible to pack 5x optical zoom without an unsightly protruding lens design.

The photos above give you a glimpse of what you can do with the HUAWEI P30 Pro. You can either choose to let people take in the ambiance of a scene with the ultra-wide angle camera, or zoom in with the SuperZoom camera to highlight a specific part.

The above images are eligible to be submitted into the Going the Distance and Hello, Life! categories.

This second series of images further emphasizes the capabilities of the SuperZoom camera. How many of you have ever seen the fine details in the Moroccan Pavillion, Putrajaya in the Putrajaya Botanical Gardens with your own eyes? Don’t be afraid to use the zoom capabilities on the HUAWEI P30 Pro. Who knows what will you find.

These images can be submitted to the Going the Distance and Hello, Life! categories.

Step back, or go closer

Sometimes the same scene can either look mediocre or blow your mind, with all the difference being a single step forward or backwards. The HUAWEI P30 Pro’s 20MP ultra-wide angle camera gives you a 120° field-of-view, allowing you to take in more of the scene than the primary 40MP camera. HUAWEI went a step further though. While more and more smartphones now tout ultra-wide angle cameras to give you that extra-wide perspective, none offer the macro capabilities that the HUAWEI P30 Pro can. The 20MP ultra-wide angle on the HUAWEI P30 Pro can focus on subjects from as close as 2.5cm away.

The ultra-wide angle camera is also supported by HUAWEI’s top-notch image processing. As you can see, the shot above has amazing dynamic range, and a great amount of detail.

For super macro shots, take a look at the butterfly’s wings in the above shot. Without the super macro capabilities, you wouldn’t be able to look at the countless minute scales that contribute to the magnificence of the butterflies. Gone are the days where you need to carry an additional macro lens to capture close ups like this, as the HUAWEI P30 Pro has it incorporated into its ultra-wide angle camera.

The above shot can be submitted into the Going the Distance and #Emotion Tag categories.

Take professional-looking portraits with the 3D ToF sensor

The addition of a 3D time-of-flight sensor to the HUAWEI P30 Pro enabled much more accurate bokeh effects on a smartphone. While previous implementations estimated the distance of the subject with multiple cameras, the 3D ToF sensor is purpose-built to do just that. You might be irked by the inaccurate bokeh with older smartphones, but these photos would leave you wondering whether they were actually taken with a professional camera.

Switch to HDR mode to use AI HDR+

One of the first tips that you will hear when you take up portraiture is to never let the subject be backlit unless all you want is a silhouette, or a blown out background. HUAWEI challenges that old limitation by adding AI HDR+ to the HUAWEI P30 series. The camera can now identify elements in the frame to intelligently apply an exposure map to give you a well-balanced exposure regardless of the adverse lighting conditions. All you need to do is to select the HDR mode, tap on your subject and take the shot.

The above shot of Marion Caunter at the Leica Factory in Germany was taken with harsh backlighting and yet she looks absolutely stunning in her black and white ensemble, with the background outside the window still visible.

This shot is eligible for the Faces, Going the Distance and #Emotion Tag categories.

We hope that with the above tips and sample images, you would be able to better take advantage of your HUAWEI P30 Pro. You can submit up to 30 shots per account, so happy hunting! Good luck and all the best in winning the HUAWEI Next Image Awards 2019! All NEXT Image Awards submissions will also be eligible for an additional RM50 voucher, so you are already winning simply by submitting your shots.
