BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd has officially revealed the pricing for its latest electric vehicle (EV) sedan, the BYD Seal. The premium variant is priced at RM179,000, while the performance variant comes in at RM199,800. The launch event, officiated by Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, showcased the BYD Seal as the first model equipped with innovative cell-to-body technology.

This cutting-edge technology seamlessly integrates the blade battery into the vehicle’s structure, ensuring stability and safety across diverse conditions. Tengku Zafrul urged multinational EV companies with existing investments in Malaysia to consider the country as a long-term business hub, leveraging its compelling proposition to expand investments and tap into the fast-growing ASEAN EV market.

He emphasized Malaysia’s efforts to create an enabling environment for the EV ecosystem, from providing incentives for local assembly and manufacturing to facilitating the development of the nation’s EV charging infrastructure. The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry aims to double the number of EV charging stations nationwide by the end of the year, reaching 2,000 units.

Tengku Zafrul reassured that the increase in sales and service tax starting March 1 would not impact EV sales, as the government has exempted the tax on EV purchases until 2025 to promote industry development. Additionally, a new EV road tax structure has been finalized and will be announced shortly by the national EV steering committee.

The BYD Seal, presented at the launch ceremony by Sime Darby Beyond Auto Sdn Bhd, BYD’s official exclusive distributor in Malaysia, promises to set new standards in the electric driving experience. The model features e-Platform 3.0, showcasing intelligence, efficiency, safety, and aesthetics. With a rear-wheel-drive architecture and an ultra-low wind resistance of 0.219 coefficient drag, the BYD Seal boasts a remarkable driving range of up to 650km on the New European Driving Cycle.

Early adopters stand to benefit, as the first 800 bookings will receive complimentary wall box chargers and free Gentari or ChargEV charging credits worth RM800. BYD’s global new energy vehicle sales totaled 3.02 million in 2023, and its total sales for the first two months of 2024 reached 6.5 million units. Stay tuned for further updates as the BYD Seal looks set to make waves in Malaysia’s electric mobility landscape.

Pokdepinion: It’s not affordable by any means but then again, what EV is actually affordable? It’s looking like a pretty good car, but you have to be willing to spend for it. Maybe we’ll get to try it out ourselves somewhere down the road.
