When it comes to toothbrush, most people just uses a good ol’ manual brush, while some may opt for fancier electric ones. They all pale in comparison against the new Dyson CameraJet, and like its name suggests, the company has fitted a built-in camera inside, along with water jet targeting system, to construct what is possibly the most over-engineered toothbrush you’ll ever see.
Dyson CameraJet Has A Camera, And A (Water) Jet
According to founder James Dyson, the company’s six-year research found that people consistently miss the gaps between teeth during brushing, which is where plaque tends to form first. He said the CameraJet was designed to address three problems: locating those gaps, removing plaque from them, and improving overall brushing performance, by combining a camera, machine learning, fluid dynamics, brushing technology and connectivity in a single toothbrush.
The CameraJet uses a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera (for comparison, a typical smartphone camera packs around 50 million of those) paired with Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting technology, an AI system that scans 28 images per second to identify, track and predict gaps between teeth in real time. Within 100 milliseconds of detecting a gap, the device triggers a conical jet burst of mouthrinse aimed at that spot. Dyson said the system runs on 16 million lines of code and was trained on 470,000 dental images collected during development.
The jet itself uses a conical spray pattern rather than the needle-type jet used in conventional water flossers. Dyson said its engineers developed a proxy plaque material in a five-year collaboration with the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Dentistry to test and refine the jet design without requiring repeated clinical trials, and found that needle-type jets could pierce through plaque without removing it, while the broader conical spray swept plaque away at lower pressure.
Its 12.5ml mouthrinse tank uses what Dyson calls an “anti-gravity” design, incorporating a diaphragm pump and pressure chamber to maintain consistent jet delivery regardless of the toothbrush’s orientation, including when held horizontally to clean the back of the teeth. The brush head features a dual-bristle design, with firmer inner bristles intended to lift surface stains and softer outer bristles for cleaning along the gumline. Each brush head carries an RFID tag that tracks usage and alerts users when replacement is needed, and a sensitive variant is available for users with more sensitive teeth and gums.
Dyson said its engineers identified that bristles on existing sonic toothbrushes can stall against the tooth surface, particularly in hard-to-reach areas, and developed a variable sonic oscillation system that varies the brushing angle to keep bristles moving. The company said external testing showed this removed up to 69% more plaque than market-leading premium electric toothbrushes in hard-to-reach areas. The CameraJet is paired with a charging dock that refills the tank in three seconds and charges the device between uses, along with a travel case for the full Dyson Dental System.
The toothbrush even has its own specialized toothpaste – to keep the camera’s view clear, Dyson also developed a non-foaming toothpaste, formulated without sodium lauryl sulfate, along with a low-foaming mouthrinse designed for use with the precision jet. Both products contain sodium fluoride, phosphates and xylitol, and are available in Ginger Mint and Spearmint flavors, with a Peppermint Sensitive toothpaste variant also available.
The device connects via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and includes a live-viewing feature through the MyDyson app that lets users see camera footage in real time. Dyson said the camera is only active during live viewing or auto-jetting, and that no images are recorded or stored on the device or in the cloud. The app also offers guided cleaning instructions, coverage mapping and brushing feedback, and users can switch between auto-detect and manual jetting modes.
Want one? Not so fast – Dyson says its full suite of Dental System is “subject to market availability,” with local pricing yet to be determined, although the US pricing of $499 suggests you’ll need to splurge a lot of cash for it.
