When it comes to monitoring battery health, iOS users have long enjoyed the Battery Health feature. Meanwhile, Android users have had to rely on third-party apps to access similar information. However, exciting news has emerged for Android users as it appears that Android 14, currently in beta, may introduce a native battery health feature. This development could provide users with valuable insights into their device’s battery capacity and overall health. Let’s explore the details of this anticipated feature and its potential benefits.

Android 14 Beta Brings Potential Battery Health Feature: A Look at What's to Come

Mishaal Rahman, former XDA-Developers’ EIC, recently revealed that Google has included new BatteryManager APIs in the Android 14 beta. These APIs offer information related to cycle count, charging status, manufacturing date, first use date, charging policy, and battery health. While two of these APIs are public and provide basic details, the remaining system APIs offer more comprehensive insights into the device’s battery health.

As of now, the system APIs for battery health are only accessible on Pixel devices running Android 14 Beta 2 or later. However, a developer named Narek has created an app called Batt that utilizes these new APIs to report battery health and charge cycles. While the app can provide useful information, it’s important to note that the accuracy of the data depends on the charging IC and the support of the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL).

The introduction of a native battery health feature in the stable release of Android 14 would be a significant step forward for Android users. Relying on third-party apps like Batt would no longer be necessary, as users would have direct access to battery health status through the device’s settings. This would provide a seamless and reliable way to monitor battery capacity and make informed decisions regarding charging habits and overall device usage.

A built-in battery health feature would offer several advantages. Users would gain insights into their device’s battery capacity, allowing them to gauge when it might be time to replace the battery or adjust their usage patterns. Additionally, it would promote transparency and empower users to take better care of their devices. By having access to this information, users can optimize battery performance and potentially extend the lifespan of their devices.

As Android 14 progresses through its beta phase, users can remain hopeful that Google will implement a dedicated battery health feature in the stable release. The inclusion of such a feature would demonstrate Google’s commitment to improving the user experience and providing valuable tools to enhance device management. Android users could soon enjoy the convenience and peace of mind that comes with monitoring battery health directly from their devices.
