MediaTek has just announced their latest flagship chipsets, the MediaTek Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200. The latter finally sees MediaTek return to their tri-cluster design that they debuted with the Helio X20 before dropping it themselves. With pretty much every flagship chipset in the market today featuring a similar core arrangement, I guess it was high time for MediaTek to bring it back anyway.

Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200 sport Cortex-A78 cores

The Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200 both will pack the latest Cortex-A78 cores for their performance clusters, and will even sport the same Mali-G77MC9 GPU. This GPU appears to be carried over from last year’s Dimensity 1000+, which does seem like a bummer for those hoping for MediaTek to bring a stronger GPU to compete against the likes of the Snapdragon 865+ and maybe the Exynos 1080.

Interestingly enough, MediaTek does have plans on supporting some raytracing capability with the new Dimensity chips. The Dimensity 1100 will come with the same 1080p 144Hz support as its predecessor, while the Dimensity 1200 bumps it up to 1080p 168Hz. Why not 165Hz, I hear you ask? Well, we have no idea as well.

On top of the architectural advantage in the CPU front with the newer Cortex-A78 cores, MediaTek will also be using a newer TSMC 6nm manufacturing process, which should allow for even better efficiency. As the Cortex-A78 cores can be clocked faster while being as efficient as the Cortex-A77 cores, it should be a nice upgrade in terms of performance for everyone.

realme, Xiaomi, vivo and OPPO are reportedly already working on designs to feature the Dimensity 1100 and Dimensity 1200 chipsets. The first devices are expected to be launched by the end of Q1 2021 or early Q2 2021.
