Chinese smartphone maker Meizu has introduced the Meizu 21, the brand’s latest flagship smartphone. It’s “designed to deliver both powerful performance and outstanding aesthetics,” and one of the device’s highlight features is the Dynamic Ring lighting located below the camera modules.

But before that, let’s talk basic specs first. The Meizu 21 comes packed with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, and for Malaysian-bound configurations, it’s paired with 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of onboard storage. It’s cooled via a vapor chamber cooling system with 37,345mm² of total cooling area and a cooling plate with 4,045mm² of area.

Above these components is the 6.55-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1,800 nits of peak brightness. It’s encased in a frame just 1.74mm thick, which the company claims to be “challenging the world record”. In any case, it’s definitely right up there as one of the slimmest as far as smartphone bezels go. The ultrasonic mTouch 2.0 sensor that handles the biometrics is claimed to be fast enough to unlock within 0.075 seconds. That’s 75 milliseconds – faster than your eye can blink.

So now let’s talk about the main subject – the Dynamic Ring, as Meizu describes it, is “a multi-functional interactive ring light system that flashes different colors for notifications, incoming calls, charging, volume adjustment and even games.” You can apparently ask the phone to showcase the exact kind of colors you want, presumably via voice assistants (with some AI sprinkled in, of course).

Meizu 21 is now available in two variants: the 12GB+256GB costs RM2,999, whereas the 12GB+512GB costs RM3,299. Purchases made by 5 April 2024 will be entitled to exclusive first-sale gifts, which consist of the Meizu Pandaer gaming earbuds and an additional 12-month warranty. You can purchase the smartphone via Shopee or Lazada under Meizu’s official stores.

Pokdepinion: I wonder if the Dynamic Ring is manually customizable. Sometimes you just want a straightforward RGB, right?
