Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Z Fold5 Officially Launched
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5
Clearly the highlight of the show this year, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 has a major upgrade in the form of a much larger cover display. This time, it’s no longer being referred to as a cover display, opting for the new name “Flex Window”. It’s not just a simple name change however as it’s capable of doing a whole lot more things this time around.
For starters, the Flex Window is a 3.4-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. Like before, you can use it to view your notifications and for easier selfies. This time around however, you can actually run apps and actually reply messages using this screen. From what I was told, only the Samsung Keyboard works for this screen, and not all apps can run here. However, with Samsung reaffirming their stance on collaborating with developers, we foresee improved support with future updates.
Apart from that, it is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, and comes with 8GB RAM along with options of either 256GB or 512GB storage. It will also be running One UI 5.1.1 based on Android 13 right out of the box. As for water resistance, it has an IPX8 rating to give consumers added peace of mind.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5
Not to forget the beastly Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, this new iterations brings a whole bunch of refinements from its predecessor. For starters, the gap that you typically see when this type of device folds have become a lot less apparent. It’s not completely flat but it’s certainly an improvement.
Apart from that, the weight has seen a notable reduction, dropping by about 10g. That might not sound like much but when you consider how heavy this type of foldable usually is, it’s a big deal. In fact, I held an S23 Ultra and the Z Fold5, one on each hand and switched hands after a bit of time, and it feels the same. Just like its Flip brethren, it also has an IPX8 water resistance rating.
Of course, the biggest upgrade it received is the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, which is paired with 12GBs of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. While we can expect a notable performance improvement, what I want to see is whether it can improve in thermals. If the latter does improve, then we can expect a more consistent performance along with better battery life.

Pokdepinion: While I’m happy the Z Flip5 saw a major improvements in the outer display, I was really hoping for a major design change for the Z Fold5 as well. The refinements are great but perhaps they’re saving something big for next year so as not to overshadow the Flip. One thing I’m really happy about is the pricing for the Z Flip5 as I expected much worse when rumors of a price increase starting making its way around the internet.
