The Samsung Exynos 980 was a surprise move out of nowhere, considering that Samsung has always used a four-number naming scheme for their chipsets. It seems like the new numbering scheme is here to stay though, with the announcement of the new Exynos 990 at Samsung Tech Day 2019.

Unlike the Exynos 980 which relied on regular ARM Cortex cores, the Exynos 990 packs two custom Exynos M5 cores alongside two Cortex A76 and four efficient Cortex A55 cores. This configuration makes it a true flagship processor from Samsung.

There’s also the new Mali G77MP11 GPU, a step up from the Mali G76MP12 in the Exynos 9820. The NPU in the Exynos 990 gets a huge upgrade too, with a dual NPU + DSP configuration promising more than 10 TOPs, a huge jump over the Exynos 9820’s 1.86 TOPs. Last but not least, there’s support for LPDDR5.

Concurrent processing of input from three sensors…

Samsung promises 20% better graphics performance and efficiency, along with a 20% CPU performance bump from the new Exynos M5 CPU cores. Along with that, Samsung will be supporting 108MP cameras and up to six cameras, with concurrent processing of input from three sensors. Will Samsung create something like the Nokia 9 PureView with this capability?

Another feature that separates the Exynos 990 from the Exynos 980 is that it doesn’t come with an integrated modem. That’s where the new Exynos Modem 5123 steps in. The new modem comes with support for everything from 2G to 5G. For 4G LTE, you can get up to 3 Gbps download speeds with 1024 QAM support. Meanwhile for 5G, up to 5.1 Gbps with sub-6 or 7.35 Gbps with mmWave is possible, thanks to support for 8CA. Of course, your mileage will vary with your telco.

Both these new chips are manufactured on Samsung’s latest 7nm EUV process, which should promises greater efficiency. The Exynos 990 and Exynos Modem 5123 are slated to enter mass production by the end of this year, so you might get to see them in action with next year’s Samsung Galaxy S11.

Pokdepinion: The Exynos 990 should widen the gap it already has over the Qualcomm Snapdragons in CPU performance. Not too sure about the GPU performance though.
