PlayStation 5 Expected to Have a Number of Surprises at Launch 28

We’ve learned quite a lot about the PlayStation 5. We also know that the CPU and GPU power of the Xbox Series X is superior, at least on paper. However, it appears that there may be more than meets the eye with the two next-gen consoles.

According to former engineer Matt Hargett, he believes that Sony will have some pleasant surprises from the PlayStation 5 at launch. On the matter of Variable Rate Shading (VRS) which the Xbox Series X supports, he says that it’s a “hard-to-speak technology” in terms of being beneficial. This is because it doesn’t automatically make games look / play better as it depends on the games and the scenes within it.

That’s right. VRS is a new DX12 feature that allows developers to change the shading rate within a single frame, and selectively reduce the level of detail in some areas of the screen, including deep shadows. When it is active, it improves the game performance, however, there is no noticeable effect on image quality.

Simply put, VRS technology can improve performance and reduce image quality. It will give developers some flexibility but its up to them to make full use of the feature.

With that being said however, he also mentioned that there are a number of PlayStation 5 features that have yet to be made public. While the Xbox Series X may be more powerful on paper, we may want to reevaluate our thoughts when both consoles have finally been launched.

For now, we will just have to wait as both next-gen consoles are expected to launch in Holiday 2020.

Pokdepinion: I’m putting my money on Sony for now as they will have better customer support in the country. Well, anything is better than non-existent support from the Xbox team here.
