Given that we spent a good chunk of this year at home, many people were looking forward to the holiday season to shop and make their homes more bearable. New toys like the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and new graphics cards from both AMD and NVIDIA were highly sought items that quickly sold out. It’s no surprise that scalpers geared up to make an easy profit, but how much profit did they manage to earn?

According to Oracle engineer Michael Driscoll via TechSpot, scalpers have profited about USD $39 million / RM158 million from the sales of PS5, Xbox Series X, and new graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA.The data was scraped from eBay’s sold listings in the US, in which Michael wrote the script for to automate the process.

In case you’re wondering how each individual product performed for scalpers, the PS5 saw about USD $14.7 million / RM59.6 million in profits, the PS5 Digital Edition with USD $4.3 million / RM17.4 million in profits, Xbox Series X with USD $8.6 million / RM34.9 million in profits and Xbox Series S with USD $1.5 million in profits.

As you can see here, this is why there are plenty of scalpers around the world. It’s that easy to make a huge profit, although it is a practice that I disagree with as I find it unethical. Regardless, it’s natural for products with high demand but low supply to easily cost a fortune.
