Hongmeng will be HUAWEI’s answer to Google’s boycott
Google will no longer provide any Android services to HUAWEI’s upcoming smartphones, but HUAWEI is reportedly well prepared for this. While the name of their “Plan B” was never revealed, HUAWEI Central reports that HUAWEI’s homegrown OS is named “Hongmeng”.
Hongmeng will probably be the OS which will power upcoming HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones, since the Chinese company will no longer be package their devices with Android. Betting on an unproven smartphone operating system has been the downfall of even giants like Nokia, so HUAWEI would be wise to tread carefully in this area.
Unless HUAWEI can somehow pull developers making apps for iOS and Android to work on a third operating system, it is highly unlikely that Hongmeng will be successful. But then, HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones in China do not use Google’s services, and they are quite successful so far.
What do you think? Would you be willing to give up the convenience of Google’s services and apps to enjoy the groundbreaking camera capabilities that HUAWEI has consistently rolled out?
Pokdepinion: I personally believe HUAWEI and Google will work something out pretty soon… but at least we know HUAWEI isn’t going to curl up and die.
[UPDATE]: HUAWEI will still continue supporting all existing HUAWEI and HONOR smartphones!
Any details on this OS? If it’s a fork of Android without any Google Services dependencies, it might have success. All android apps will run there with no issues…
Hi we don’t know any details about this yet, because it appears to be a pretty secretive project on HUAWEI’s end…
