AMD’s Upcoming Ryzen 8000 APU May Match RTX 4070 Laptop GPU On Performance

One particular chip contains as much as 40 CUs – more than even the PlayStation 5.

Hardware leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead has released new information for the upcoming Ryzen 8000 series portfolio which contains multiple architectures, including Strix Point, Strix Halo (Sarlak), Fire Range and Hawk Point. The onboard GPUs will be using “RDNA3+”, likely an updated version of the RDNA3 architecture with some specific optimizations for the mobile platforms (similar to Ryzen 6000 series).

These architectures are likely a direct successor to current-gen Dragon Range APUs, or at the very least on the same segment of products. The Strix Point APU is said to contain up to 12 cores, with a hybrid design that contains 4C/8T Zen 5 cores and 8C/16T Zen 5c cores. This family of chips will feature up to 16 CUs – which the leaker claims “expected to trade blows (with) 35W RTX 3050 Laptop GPUs”.

A similarly-named Strix Halo – or as some leakers calls it “Sarlak”, is a whole different beast: this mega-APU features chiplet designs that houses up to 16 Zen 5 cores, and up to a massive 40 CU onboard RDNA3+ GPU with 32MB Infinity Cache to provide as much compute power as a 95W RTX 4070 Laptop GPU. This design is likely a response to Apple’s highly-successful M-series chips with its unified memory and SoC architecture that provides high power efficiency, and leaks are pointing to 2H 2024 launch. There are downsized versions of the chip that equals its performance to RTX 4060, RTX 4050 and RTX 3050 Laptop GPUs as well.

The direct successor to desktop-class Dragon Range APUs are named “Fire Range”, retaining the same 16-core count for its flagship chip. Not much is known aside from a possible RDNA3 / RDNA3+ onboard graphics, though this part of the information seems to be conflicting. Another chip, named Hawk Point, is likely a refresh of current-gen Phoenix chips – meaning the same Zen 4 core (up to 8 of them) with some expected minor enhancements.

Pokdepinion: The Strix Halo is easily the most anticipated chip for me. Will be interesting to see the performance against conventional dGPU-powered systems.
