While modern display technologies has been pretty maturely developed at this point, there are still many areas where it’s still worth innovating on. One of them includes flexible displays – while this has materialized in the form of curved OLEDs and foldable displays, LG (particularly, LG Display) is taking the next step to demonstrate its stretchable displays’ potential.

Compared to existing OLED displays that can be curved and folded, this stretchable display (which uses microLED) is significantly more flexible, and enables a new avenue of applications, such as wearables. To make the point across, LG made the displays as part of the “clothing and bag concepts” presented in Seoul Fashion Week last week.

This isn’t the first appearance of the stretchable display, though, as LG’s display arm has debuted this concept back in 2022. The prototype can extend from 12 inches to 14 inches while maintaining a resolution of 100ppi (pixels per inch) – around the same as a desktop monitor, while capable of delivering the “full color spectrum.” That said, the company hasn’t made clear on what exactly powers them, and how long they’d last.

“Stretchable displays are therefore not only widely applicable in various industries such as fashion, wearables, and mobility, but they could revolutionize everyday life by enabling an era of IT devices that can be comfortably worn like clothes or attached to the body,” the company said in its press release. It also added that the research and development effort for this technology involved 19 institutions from the industry and academic sectors since 2020.
