DDR5 has just entered the market, but Samsung has already teased DDR6 memory that’s slated to come in 2024. The DDR6 specifications have yet to be finalized by JEDEC and the rest of the industry, but Samsung is providing pretty good insight into what to expect from DDR6, GDRR6+ and GDDR7.

Samsung DDR6 goes up to DDR6-12800, 4-channel per module

Samsung is looking at speeds of up to DDR6-12800 for the initial modules following JEDEC’s specifications, with overclocking modules taking it up a notch to DDR6-17000. Aside from the frequency improvement, memory efficiency is also slated to make a huge leap. DDR5 brought with it two channels per module, and DDR6 is going to make that four channels per module. On top of that, we should also be looking at support for up to 64 banks, which should increase not only performance but also memory density per module.

Along with DDR6, Samsung also teased their LPDDR6 memory. Similar to the normal DDR6, you can expect to see up to LPDDR6-17000 memory on offer. The main advantage is that it should consume 20% less power, making it perfect for mobile devices in the future.

Samsung GDDR6+ with up to 27Gbps speeds

NVIDIA worked with Micron to develop the GDDR6X memory featured on the GeForce RTX 30 series cards, with the GeForce RTX 3090 topping out at 21Gbps memory. Samsung’s GDDR6+ will go up to 27Gbps, which is close to 30% faster. However, if you want a bigger jump, you will have to wait for the upcoming GDDR7. While it is still unknown when it will arrive, it is expected to bring up to 32Gbps speeds, or more than 50% faster than the fastest GDDR6X memory in the market.

There’s also HBM3 in the works, but as we have seen, HBM technology appears to be too pricey to be incorporated into consumer products. Instead, we have seen enterprise and server-class GPUs getting paired up with HBM2, like the NVIDIA A100. Samsung is targeting around 800GB/s for their HBM3 solutions, and it is slated to come in Q2 2022.
