Grab Malaysia marked the country’s 69th Merdeka Day with a predominantly women-led contingent taking part in national day celebrations across Putrajaya, Pahang, Penang, Sabah, Johor and Melaka. The contingent included driver- and delivery-partners, persons with disabilities (PWD) partners, and Grab personnel, with 100 women partners taking part across the six states.
“Every Hari Kebangsaan (National Day) we celebrate the people who make Malaysia what it is. This year, we are proud to put our #WirawatiNegaraku at the heart of our celebrations, the women across our Grab ecosystem who work hard for their families, contribute to their communities and build a better future for themselves and those around them,” said Adelene Foo, Managing Director of Grab Malaysia. “Their stories remind us that nation-building is not only about the big moments, but also the everyday choices, sacrifices and contributions that keep Malaysia moving.”
Grab Malaysia: Flexible Earning Opportunities Support Women & PWD Partners
Grab said flexible earning arrangements on its platform allow many women partners to contribute financially to their households while also managing personal responsibilities. For PWD partners specifically, the company said the platform offers a way to participate in the workforce and build greater independence.
Syuhainie Shaharuddin, a PWD delivery-partner who took part in the Putrajaya contingent, said earning through Grab had given her financial independence as well as the confidence to pursue entrepreneurship. “We are capable of delivering great service and fulfilling our responsibilities just like anyone else. Being part of Grab’s women-led contingent so far has strengthened my patriotic spirit and belief in myself.”
Grab said its safety features and community initiatives, including its #SisBoleh program, are intended to support women’s participation on the platform. Naomi Say, Head of Regional Platform Safety at Grab, said the company’s safety measures aim to give women confidence when travelling for work, whether during the day or after dark, and said the company continues to examine how it can support women before, during and after each trip.
In Putrajaya, Grab partnered with GXBank and Jaya Grocer to bring together close to 50 marchers, including women PWD partners, along with 10 EV delivery bikes ridden by women delivery-partners and four Grab EV cars. Grab said the composition of the contingent was intended to reflect the range of ways women contribute to their families, communities and the broader gig economy, with participation across all six states serving as a visible representation of women’s role in the workforce.
