Mastercard has announced the appointment of Beena Pothen as Division President, West Southeast Asia, overseeing the company’s business across Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei and Myanmar. The appointment coincides with the introduction of a new two-division leadership structure within Southeast Asia, intended to strengthen Mastercard’s focus on markets with varying economic profiles and levels of digital maturity.

Beena Pothen To Lead Mastercard In West SEA

Pothen previously served as Country Manager for Malaysia and Brunei. In that role, she was involved in growing customer relationships, expanding connected payment ecosystems, and working with governments, financial institutions and industry stakeholders on digital transformation initiatives across the region.

Richard Wormald, President of Asia Pacific at Mastercard, said the region is undergoing rapid change driven by AI-enabled commerce, digital wallets, tokenization and new payment experiences. He noted that Asia Pacific includes both some of the world’s most advanced digital economies and some of its fastest-growing markets, describing it as an “important proving ground for the future of commerce,” which requires leadership capable of adapting quickly to change.

“What inspires me most is the opportunity to build from a position of strength: deepening trusted partnerships, bringing the best of Mastercard’s capabilities to market and helping shape the next chapter of digital commerce for businesses, governments and consumers. I am excited to work alongside our teams and partners to accelerate growth, unlock new opportunities and create even greater impact across this vibrant part of Southeast Asia,” Pothen added.

Her appointment forms part of a broader series of senior leadership changes across Mastercard’s Asia Pacific operations, intended to strengthen the company’s ability to support customers as the payments landscape continues to evolve. Wormald said the changes are aimed at bringing Mastercard’s leadership closer to customers, helping them adapt with greater confidence amid ongoing shifts in the sector.

He added that the newly appointed leaders bring experience spanning payments, technology, financial services and various markets across Asia Pacific, which he said would strengthen Mastercard’s ability to meet current customer needs while preparing for future developments in the industry.
