The award is based on Ookla’s Speedtest report for Malaysia, which measures network coverage and service quality in the past two quarters of 2024. CelcomDigi secured the top spot in the Best Mobile Coverage category with a Coverage Score of 30.73. With the Celcom and Digi merger since November 2022, the 4G network coverage with two telcos combined reaches 97% of populated areas in Malaysia and recorded a scan count of nearly 249 million on over 303,000 devices, with a verified coverage area of 106,366 km².

CelcomDigi’s closest rival, Maxis, achieves roughly the same scan count and devices, though its coverage is 11.4% smaller, which resulted in lower Coverage Score at 27.18. Telekom Malaysia’s Unifi network operates at a significantly smaller scale, which nets itself a score of 18.03.

The telecommunications giant also claims that it surpasses other mobile network operators by at least 50% in site count; while its ongoing integration and modernization exercise included upgrading the network with advanced technologies such as 64T64R massive MIMO, Robotic Process Automation, Multi Operator Core Network sharing, and AI-based self-organizing network capabilities.

With over 90% of its network sites now 5G-ready, CelcomDigi expects to modernize 75% of its network by the end of 2024. This 18,000-site 5G-ready network is designed to enable fast deployment of 5G and 5G-Advanced technology across its extensive footprint, as the company is positioning itself as one of the largest 5G networks provider in the region.
