Recently, U Mobile accidentally published their 5G page by accident, leading to many believing that they are readying up to offer 5G network in Malaysia. It appears that they are negotiating with DNB (Digital Nasional Berhad) in order to offer it nationwide.

Based on details found on the page, U Mobile is expected to offer 5G via DNB’s single wholesale network. They’ve also listed compatible 5G devices alongside all the postpaid and prepaid plans that are geared for as it’s listed as “5G-ready”. There is even a coverage map which lists 3G, 4G, and “Future Coverage”, although there is none specifically for 5G yet.

This is particularly interesting as only YTL Communications and Telekom Malaysia are the only ones to have officially agreed to use DNB for 5G connectivity. It was never made clear if U Mobile has already signed up with them, but it’s worth wondering that DNB is offering free 5G access for telcos until 30th June 2022.

While this sounds nice, major telcos have been hesitant to sign up with DNB’s Reference Access Offer (RAO) due to concerns surrounding pricing and transparency. In case you’re not aware, the wholesale price is currently set at RM30,000 per Gbps per month along with a 10-year lock-in period, which brings cost efficiency concerns as well.

Assuming U Mobile does officially offer 5G connectivity soon, it will be the 2nd telco to offer it, and the first major telco out of the big four to offer it. In case you didn’t know, the orange telco is listed as a supported telco by Apple. For now, we will report more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.

Pokdepinion: Given that the page seems to be practically complete, I’m about pretty sure it’s almost ready to go. Just gotta wait a little longer for it, which I assume is more about finalizing the nitty gritty details.
