Nothing CEO Carl Pei has published a new essay on X/Twitter titled “Toolmakers”, outlining his perspective on the future of AI and revealing that Nothing’s first AI-native product will launch next month. The product, he notes, will have no new screen and, in his words, “couldn’t have been an app.”
Nothing’s Case For AI As A Productivity Tool First
In the essay, Carl Pei argues that the race to find AI’s “iPhone moment” is premature. He draws a parallel to how past technologies, from personal computers to mobile phones, found their footing in workplaces before becoming mainstream consumer products. In his view, AI is still at the beginning of that same journey, and productivity tools will lay the foundation for wider adoption rather than a single breakout consumer device.
A central theme in the piece is the “context gap”, he alleges – despite increasingly capable AI models, Carl Pei points out that AI still knows very little about people’s everyday lives. Even when users connect their inboxes, calendars, and work conversations to AI assistants, they still find themselves manually providing backstory and context. Closing that gap, he believes, could make existing AI significantly more useful without requiring new underlying breakthroughs.
He also pushes back on the assumption that context lives inside a chat interface. His argument is that context exists in the tools people carry and use every day, and in the conversations, ideas, and experiences that form their lives. Bringing that context closer to AI could fundamentally shift how proactive and genuinely helpful these tools become.
Carl Pei positions Nothing as uniquely suited to compete in this space, arguing that his company’s hardware and software capabilities, recognizable design language, and a large number of users allow the smartphone maker to have a better go at this than, say, Rabbit and Humane – both early but failed examples of this emerging category. The essay stops short of naming or describing the upcoming product in any detail beyond the screenless hint, with a full reveal expected in December 2026.
Pokdepinion: Rabbit R1, Humane Pin, and then this. I have my doubts, especially with the idea that you’ll be giving your entire life to an AI service that most likely requires internet to work.
