AirAsia CEO Reportedly Working On New Super App to Compete Against Grab, WeChat, and GoJek
There are many apps out there that you can download right now, and there are also super apps, which offer a variety of services and functions within a single app. It looks like AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes is working on a new super app to compete against Grab, WeChat, and GoJek.
AirAsia CEO Reveals New Super App In The Works
As first reported by BBC, AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes is working on a new super app for the Southeast Asian region to compete against the likes of Grab, WeChat, and GoJek. It’s expected to offer a wide variety of services including shopping, delivery, payment, entertainment, and travel.
Unfortunately, not much else is made known about the super app. However, it’s expected to at least include most, if not all, of the businesses and services under the AirAsia Group. Some of those businesses include BigPay, Santan, Tune Hotels, and AirAsia.
AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes mentioned that he’s been looking for other ways to generate income while flights were grounded as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. He has been working on improving their mobile app and their BigPay payment app.
The downturn was a blessing in disguise in some ways as it allowed us to focus more on it. I know a super app sounds like a lofty target but Grab and GoJek also started out small as food or mobility apps.

BBC also mentioned that AirAsia current has a large database of over 60 million users to ensure a good start. At the moment, there is no word yet on when this super app will be released but we will be reporting more on this as soon as information becomes available so stay tuned.
