So long, WinRAR: Microsoft Is Adding Native RAR Support In Windows 11

If you’ve been on the Internet long enough, chances are: A, you have encounter compressed files such as .RAR before; and B, you saw one of those WinRAR memes depicting the software’s eternal trialware status. In any case, Microsoft has ringed the death knell for the software – for Windows 11 users, anyway – as the operating system will soon gain native support for .RAR files.

“We have added native support for additional archive formats, including tar, 7-zip, rar, gz and many others using the libarchive open-source project. You now can get improved performance of archive functionality during compression on Windows,” Panos Panay, Microsoft’s Chief Product Officer for Windows and Devices, wrote in his blog post.

This feature is one of the few that gets announced in the annual Microsoft Build developer conference. Among other things include an AI copilot that gets baked right into Windows, so expect your next Windows 11 update to be a significant one. In the meantime, pour one out for WinRAR – and thank the software for its service for all these years.

Pokdepinion: Memes aside, WinRAR has truly been useful for a lot of people when dealing with .RAR files. It probably deserves a place in the history of computing, you know?
