It looks like gaming handhelds and hardware modding almost go hand-in-hand. Case in point – this particular ROG Ally is modded with larger and faster RAM, though it’s by no means simple. This mod comes courtesy of SlickBuys Mods and Repairs, a repair and modding shop based in California, USA.

Upgrading systems with soldered RAM often involves a more delicate process that requires soldering skills, and this is no exception. In fact, since ROG Ally is as jam-packed with hardware as it is due to its compact size, soldering work is even more difficult to pull off.

The whole process involves desoldering – and making sure the nearby components do not slip away as they get heated up and desolder. Then, the modder introduces the new set of RAM, which are four pieces of Samsung LPDDR5X-7500 64Gb (8GB) modules that replace the original quartet of Samsung LPDDR5-6400 32Gb (4GB) modules. Swapping soldered RAM modules also requires a modified BIOS to work, and this again involves desoldering, re-flashing, and re-soldering work to be done.

The modder did not show any performance benchmarks to compare between the before and after, though some kind of performance is expected given the increased RAM speeds. However, those in the US can get their own ROG Ally modded for undisclosed, case-by-case pricing to have the memory upgraded for them.
