HUAWEI Mate X5 Announced: A Foldable Powerhouse with Upgrades

In a series of unexpected smartphone launches, HUAWEI has dropped another bombshell – the Mate X5. As a direct follow-up to the Mate X3, the Mate X5 brings notable enhancements under the hood while retaining much of its predecessor’s design.

The HUAWEI Mate X5 boasts the same 7.85-inch LTPO OLED main display with a resolution of 2,224 x 2,496 pixels, along with a 6.4-inch LTPO OLED cover display sporting 1,080 x 2,504-pixel resolution and Kunlun Glass protection. While the design remains largely unchanged, HUAWEI adds a fresh Phantom Purple color to the lineup, joining the existing Feather White, Feather Black, Feather Gold, and Green Mountain options available on the Mate X3.
The camera island on the back receives a minor design tweak, but the camera setup remains consistent – featuring a 50MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture, accompanied by a 13MP f/2.2 ultrawide lens and a 12MP f/3.4 periscope module with 5x optical zoom.
The HUAWEI Mate X5 packs up to a whopping 16GB of RAM and offers 1TB of storage. While the official chipset details remain undisclosed, numerous reports from China suggest that it could house the same Kirin 9000s SoC found in the recently launched Mate 60 series. Speculations point to this being a 5G-capable chip built on SMIC’s 7nm process technology.
An intriguing feature of the Mate X5 is the revamped antenna design, promising improved signal reception. HUAWEI’s Lingxi antenna incorporates AI algorithms to select the optimal network, ensuring seamless connectivity. Furthermore, antennas around the device’s frame utilize dual-mode tuning technology, further enhancing signal quality.
Mate X5 boasts a larger 5,060mAh battery, supporting 66W wired charging, 50W wireless charging, and 7.5W reverse wireless charging. The device runs on HarmonyOS 4 and introduces novel air gesture controls, enabling users to navigate through videos, webpages, and images without physically touching the main display. Additionally, the Mate X5 carries an IPX8 waterproof rating and offers two-way BeiDou satellite messaging within China.
Currently, the HUAWEI Mate X5 is available for pre-sale on VMall, with open sales expected to commence on September 15. With its upgraded features and sleek design, the HUAWEI Mate X5 presents itself as a formidable contender in the foldable smartphone market, catering to users seeking the latest in technology and innovation.
Pokdepinion: I think we’ve had enough time to let HarmonyOS mature, and I’m personally curious to see what it can do to provide an optimized experience on larger screens. To be precise, to change from a standard smartphone style UI to a tablet-style UI without making either one feel awkward to use.
