New MediaTek Dimensity chipsets to arrive 20th January
Qualcomm has unveiled their latest Snapdragon 888 chipset, and Samsung is expected to unveil their next-gen Samsung Exynos chip later today. MediaTek doesn’t want to be left out of the fun either, with them announcing on Weibo that they will be releasing new members of the MediaTek Dimensity series on 20th January.
MediaTek claims that they will be bringing an “upgraded experience” with the “superior technology” of the upcoming MediaTek Dimensity series, so it does seem pretty interesting. The flagship might just be the mysterious MediaTek MT6893 that has been spotted on AnTuTu benchmarks scoring 622 409 points.
According to rumors, the upcoming MediaTek Dimensity chipset will be manufactured on a 6nm process, and will sport Cortex-A78 CPU cores running at up to 3GHz. While Arm’s Cortex-X1 cores are currently the go-to for chipmakers wanting to deliver the highest levels of performance, there are reportedly concerns about the efficiency of the Cortex-X1 architecture.
The efficiency-focused design of the Cortex-A78 should be a good compromise for MediaTek, especially as the Taiwanese chipmaker is still trying to shake off the stigma of inefficient and hot mobile chipsets, even though their recent releases like the Helios G90T are actually pretty competitive. MediaTek is expected to not only release one chipset, with a new lineup of several chipsets spanning various segments expected to be unveiled this 20th January.
