DOOM Is (Officially) In Lawnmowers, So You Can Rip And Tear The Grass Until It Is Done
DOOM is a game that gamers consider eternal, but perhaps not in the way that you may expect. It’s found its place in things like calculators, pregnancy test kits, Windows Notepad, and actual bacteria. If you can find a screen, there’s a good chance it’ll run DOOM; and if there isn’t, you wouldn’t rule out the chance it does, too.
But this time around is a bit special because it’s not some jerry-rigging from tinkerers or hobbyists; instead, it’s a thing, officially, in the lawnmowers from a Swedish power products manufacturer Husqvarna. If you’re feeling a bit murderous (to grass), the manufacturer will be releasing an update for its Automower NERA line of lawnmowers, which enables the lawnmower’s tiny screen to play the classic DOOM.
That being said, there are a bunch of caveats. For one, it’s opt-in (for obvious reasons); secondly, only Episode 1 of the game is playable. More importantly, though, it’s a limited-time affair: the minigame will be removed via an update that is set to release in September 2024. It’s also limited to select regions – Asian regions, unfortunately, didn’t make the list.
But hey, there’s always the modern DOOM titles if you’re feeling like mowing down some demons. Virtually, of course.
