Price-conscious gamers, Valve has brought a good news for you (or really, everyone). Steam is now offering a new demo mode which allows players to play the supported titles however they like for 90 minutes before making a purchase decision. The existing refund policy still applies – as long as your total playtime is less than two hours after the purchase, made within last 14 days. (Do the maths and that’s up to 3.5 hours worth of gameplay for free.)

Valve hasn’t said anything so far regarding the new free trial scheme, as this was only first spotted by Kotaku with only a single title – Dead Space remake – supporting the feature. It’s also unclear if this may end up featured in large number of titles, or only a select few publishers will go ahead with this plan. As far as demos go, Ubisoft provides a more complete roster of games with many of its recent titles having demo versions to try out, while most other publishers do away with it many years ago, or just never had one to begin with.

This should be good news for gamers – the first 90 minutes should be enough for most players to identify any technical issues (with how oddly prevalent PC port fiascos has become lately) or unsatisfactory aspects of the game before they go ahead with the purchase. This in turn should put pressure on publishers to take extra care with their game quality to earn gamers’ hard-earned money.
