TikTok May Look Ever-So-Slightly Different Today Thanks To A New Font
The new font is in-house, named “TikTok Sans”.
Short video platform TikTok just announced its switching to a new font for its UI, replacing the old Proxima Nova typeface. The technical reasoning behind the switch is “optimizing legibility and reading retention, along with providing multi-language font support”, as stated in the company’s blog post.
According to the company, “TikTok Sans letters have bigger openings and clearer strokes, making them much easier to distinguish from one another.” The new font also features “slicker and simpler shapes, enabling better recognizability and reliability across languages.” They added: “Compared to the previous Proxima Nova typeface, TikTok Sans is visually larger and overall line height has been increased to improve readability. A special formula has been introduced to improve letter spacing.”
There’s also the new anti-spoofing font that mirrors that of Twitter. Certain fonts, especially Sans Serif types often have very similar looking characters such as ‘0’ (number zero), ‘o’ (small letter O) and ‘O’ (capital letter O); as well is ‘l’ (small capital L) and ‘I’ (capital letter I). The account handles will feature this anti-spoofing version of the font to prevent potential impersonations.
The new font is already rolling out globally, so there’s a good chance that you’re already using and perhaps missed the fact that now it has a new font. (Tip: look at the number ‘3’ in particular if you aren’t sure. The ‘3’ in the new font should look flat at the top.)
