Square Enix President Really Wants To Do Blockchain

Not to be content with just NFTs on his open letter last year, President of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, in his open letter this year has decided to double down on the idea: to focus on “blockchain entertainment”.

The letter starts off with a recap of global financial situation, which also mentions the selling of its three subsidiary studios. On the 8th paragraph, Matsuda mentioned the publisher is “most focused on blockchain entertainment” for its medium-term business strategy. Certainly not the most popular decision given the notoriety associated with blockchain-related stuffs in the recent period. He then further elaborates on the decision by stating Web3 is “a firmly established buzzword among businesspeople”. Talk about irony…

While NFTs has somewhat found its way on certain markets (such as metaverse, arts, or even K-Pop to a certain extent), it is extremely unwelcomed by the gaming community at large. Publishers like Team17, Ubisoft and many big-name publishers has taken different levels of exploration to NFT integration for a while throughout last year, with Ubisoft going as far as actually implementing the system through Ghost Recon: Breakpoint under the “Quartz” collection – which ended up backfired spectacularly.

Despite Matsuda claiming back in 2021 that blockchain market “was driven more by speculative investors than by gamers”, we’re not sure what has since changed for him to be doubling down on this idea.
