ASUS is set to conquer the gaming monitor market in 2017
Worldwide LCD monitor shipments were reportedly stagnating in 2015 and 2016, with around 120 million units shipped in 2015, and looks to remain at the same level in 2016. However the shipments of gaming monitor shipments (144 Hz refresh rate and above), the number of shipments have doubled from 550 000 – 600 000 units in 2015 to more than 1.2 million units in 2016.
Asustek, BenQ and Acer are already competing aggressively and Asustek will become the largest vendor of such products in 2016 with a market share of 35%, followed by BenQ at 22-24% and Acer at 17-19%. While gaming models make up little of the overall volume (1 – 2%), their production value is around 3% due to their high average selling prices. For 2017, the worldwide gaming monitor shipment is expected to double again to 2.5 million units, with up to 3.5 million in 2018.
Also contributing to the growth is the increasing popularity of curved LCD monitors which has not seen significant shipments in 2016 but are expected to rise drastically in 2017. The rest of the display manufacturers will of course not sit idly as the top players reap the profits of a booming gaming monitor market, and the existing manufacturers are expected to see fierce competition from Samsung, LG, Dell, HP, Lenovo and AOC/Phillips.
With that said, Vincent Chiou, associate president of Asustek Computer’s Monitor Business Unit, is reported to be not concerned with the new competitors as he believes competition will help the market see more development and innovation in the industry. As the demand for gaming and enterprise monitors rise, Chiou expects to see an growth of 5 – 10% in overall monitor shipments in 2017, with Asustek maintaining its position as the largest vendor in gaming monitor market.
Chiou noted that gaming models currently account for 10% of Asustek’s overall monitor shipments and Europe and North America are the main selling markets for gaming monitors with demand from Asia Pacific and China also growing strong. Asustek’s share in Europe’s gaming monitor market is about 40% and 50% in North America.
As for new technology, Asustek is planning to launch a gaming monitor with a 240Hz refresh rate in the near future, featuring Nvidia’s GSync technology. The monitor will also feature Asustek’s ultralow blue light and flickerfree technologies.
Chiou expects gaming monitor shipments to grow over 100% and new features such as larger size, higher resolution, curve panel and increased refresh rate, are all expected to help increase gaming monitor demand in 2017.
Pokdepinion: ASUS monitors are great, with an amazing set of features as well as great design. I also thought that their prices will put them out of the range of many gamers, but apparently it is not so as they have the most market share actually.
