We’re seeing a bit of a trend in gadgets where fragrance has started to become a selling point – Apacer recently introduced a new portable SSD, the AS712, which features a distinctly nature look with what it claimed as the “world’s first essential oil diffuser SSD.”

Adding fragrance into gadgets isn’t the newest idea, and we already have two examples from ASUS, one of which you can buy today. However, we are pretty certain that such an idea hasn’t been implemented into an SSD before this, so it’s a valid claim from the Taiwanese storage maker.

For starters, the portable SSD’s enclosure are constructed using natural bamboo and aluminum alloy, while the separate cradle also includes recycled plastic and reservoir slit in its composition. Unsurprisingly, eco-friendliness is among the key selling points of this product on top of the headline-grabbing fragrance capability.
There are two ways you can introduce fragrance: option one involves the cradle that sits on the desk, where you add 1-2 drops of essential oil into the diffuser stone; as for option two, user simply add the drops directly onto the bamboo surface and let it diffuse normally. Similarly, you can connect the SSD to any PC via the cradle’s included USB-C connector, or use a good ol’ cable instead.

As for the SSD itself, the Apacer AS712 features sequential read/write speeds of up to 1,000MB/s and 900MB/s respectively, connected via USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) interface. As noted in the datasheet, you’ll have to supply your own essential oil, and the company advise against excessive application of the liquids to avoid damaging the material. It is backed up by a three-year warranty, though no availability information has been announced as of this writing.
Pokdepinion: I guess I expect more fragrance stuffs to appear in the next Computex.
