[LEAKED] ASUS ZenFone 5’s design appears online; vertical dual camera, 18:9 display

The next step for ASUS after the ZenFone 4 is, naturally, the ZenFone 5. Once again using a name they have used way back in 2014, the ASUS ZenFone 5 is set to arrive at Mobile World Congress 2018. Here’s a peek at a member of the ASUS ZenFone 5 family, codenamed ASUS X00PD, courtesy of images obtained from a leaked user manual.

If the images are to be believed, ASUS seems to have been inspired by a certain fruity tech brand. Yep, a vertically-oriented dual camera. While rumors were rife of a iPhone X-esque notch in the screen, thankfully that didn’t make it to the final product. ASUS seems to have moved forward with a metal unibody too, unlike their previous lower end devices which featured plastic at the top and bottom ends.

The front looks to be carried over from the recent ASUS ZenFone Max Plus M1, which features a 5.7″ 18:9 display. Hopefully this one has an upgraded resolution of 2160 x 1080, but I am not keeping my hopes too high. The screen’s corners are nicely curved though. The thick body also points to a large battery in this device, which probably means this device will be a part of the Max series.

Why did I say it’s a mid-range device? Geekbench entries by the device codenamed ASUS X00PD showed that the device sports a Snapdragon 430. It is also shown to be running Android 8.0 Oreo. The device also comes with a microUSB port, which isn’t something ASUS uses in their flagship devices. Luckily, ASUS didn’t get inspired by the fruity tech brand to remove the 3.5mm jack as well.

Pokdepinion: I hope the Snapdragon 430 isn’t really going to be used in a third generation of their mid-range devices. The Snapdragon 450 is a much better choice.
