NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 10% faster than AMD RX 480!

NVIDIA is most probably purposely leaking these sweet tidbits about their upcoming NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 card, because now we have the benchmark results of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060! Screenshots of the GTX 1060’s scores in 3DMark Firestrike benchmarks have surfaced on Xfastest, a chinese forum.

Seems like all the specifications from the leak are in line with what we already know. A GPU clocked at up to 1.7 GHz and 6GB of 8Gbps GDDR5 memory. 1280 shader units put it at exactly half of the GTX 1080’s shader count, a nice number for a mid-end card. Let’s get down to looking at the performance scores.

GTX 1060 vs RX 480 Firestrike

In the 3DMark Firestrike test, the GTX 1060 scores 11 225, beating the RX 480 (benchmark results obtained from Guru3D.com’s review) by around 3%. Probably this is why the upcoming driver update for the RX 480 promises a 3% performance boost?

GTX 1060 vs RX 480 Firestrike Ultra

The gap widens further in Firestrike Ultra, with the difference coming close to 10%! Now let’s take a look at the slides that were leaked about the GTX 1060.

In this slide, we see that NVIDIA claims around 15% better performance than the AMD RX 480, quite a believable amount if you consider that the GTX 1060 tested weren’t on official drivers yet. Official drivers will bring optimizations that will probably be able to push the GTX 1060 to achieve something closer to its claimed performance figures. Also note that the “Performance” metric can be based on any game, probably one with Gameworks, which gimps the performance of AMD cards.

If these performance figures are real, and with more that can be squeezed out via driver updates, and not to mention overclocking, it seems like NVIDIA is coming in strong in the battle for mainstream graphics card dominance with the GTX 1060. Now, to see the official price. Rumored to be around $250, it is a pretty potent card, especially when comparing it to the RX 480 which is priced at $239.

Pokdepinion: AMD does have the advantage of being able to Crossfire, while the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 is not capable of multi-GPU configurations. I guess they will have to bank heavily on that until their Vega cards come out.
