U Mobile has completed the migration of its customers to its own nationwide ULTRA5G network following the end of its wholesale access agreement with Digital Nasional Berhad (DNB) on 1 July 2026, giving the telecommunications provider – as the sole operator of Malaysia’s second 5G network – full control of its 5G Standalone (5G SA) network and enabling it to introduce new products and services independently.
U Mobile Officially Exits DNB Networks, Now Operates Independently
The transition follows U Mobile’s rollout of its own 5G infrastructure, which began in July 2025. The company stated that its network now covers more than 85% of populated areas in Malaysia and includes over 190 in-building coverage (IBC) sites, with plans to expand its footprint to more than 600 sites.
The company said it will continue to develop services that take advantage of its standalone 5G architecture, including network prioritization during high-traffic periods, reserved network capabilities for enhanced performance, built-in security features, and additional services enabled by its own network infrastructure. To support further network expansion, U Mobile has also secured RM4.3 billion in syndicated financing from a consortium of local and international financial institutions.
With U Mobile out of DNB’s 5G networks, the state-owned operator now opens up a new 3.3-3.4GHz spectrum which effectively doubled the capacity with the new contiguous 200MHz block when combined with existing 3.4-3.5GHz spectrum (and this should mean faster speeds in congested periods if you’re a non-U Mobile subscriber). This network is currently responsible for a majority of leading telco operators in the country, including CelcomDigi, Maxis, and Yes (YTL Communications), with a combined total of 30 million subscribers nationwide.
