Apple has announced HomePod mini 2, the next generation of its compact smart speaker, with new color options and updated audio features. The speaker can be used on its own, as a stereo pair or as part of a multiroom setup; it also supports four-speaker surround sound when paired with the new Apple TV 4K, and it can act as the default speaker for a Mac.

HomePod mini 2 Features

HomePod mini 2 is powered by the Apple S10 chip and uses computational audio to analyze music in real time. The system adjusts dynamic range, loudness and acoustic performance, and the speaker outputs 360-degree sound from its compact body.

The four-speaker home theatre setup requires four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers in matching pairs (front and rear). The speakers and Apple TV recognize each speaker’s position in the room, then calibrate audio timing and levels automatically. The speaker can also serve Mac computers for movies, gaming, FaceTime and video calls. This works with a single HomePod or a stereo pair on Macs with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Apple noted the new colors are designed to match Mac desktop setups.

Sound Glow turns the top of the speaker into a light display that pulses with the music and reacts to bass and treble, the colors of which are generated from the album artwork shown in Now Playing. Users can also select a soundscape, such as rain, to trigger set animations. Voice control for Sound Glow requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running the latest software.

HomePod mini 2 supports voice commands for smart home actions, including locking the front door, closing the garage, lowering blinds, adjusting the thermostat and turning off lights. The Home app allows users to set up automations and scenes for multiple accessories. As a home hub, the speaker also lets users control accessories from an iPhone while away.

Sound Recognition listens for smoke or carbon monoxide alarms and sends a notification to the user’s iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch when one is detected. Users can then check in through the Home app and listen or talk to someone at home. Apple states that Siri request audio is not stored by default.

Pricing & Availability

HomePod mini 2 can be pre-ordered from 15 October at 9am (MYT) through apple.com/my/store and the Apple Store app. It is offered in pink, green, blue, white and midnight. Pre-orders are open in Malaysia and more than 23 other countries and regions, while availability in stores begins on Friday, 30 October. Pokdepinion: Sounds like a decent upgrade for anyone already deep in the Apple ecosystem.
