Microsoft has announced that it is working with AMD to create a new processor for artificial intelligence (AI) workloads, code-named Athena. The software company will provide “financial support” to the chipmaker as part of their partnership. According to a Bloomberg report, both Microsoft and AMD are looking to offer the AI market an alternative to NVIDIA, the current dominating force in the AI market.

As Microsoft continues to deepen its relationship with chipmakers, the development of AI chips with AMD reflects a larger plan. The move is not only aimed at creating AI chips but also embracing the generative AI wave in its entirety. It is believed that Microsoft and AMD’s desire to offer an alternative to NVIDIA could drive the development of innovative AI chips and processors.

During an earnings call, Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, said, “We are very excited about our opportunity in AI – this is our No. 1 strategic priority. We are in the very early stages of the AI computing era, and the rate of adoption and growth is faster than any other technology in recent history.”

Despite Microsoft’s announcement, AMD has denied its involvement in the development of Athena. The company stated that it is not involved in the development of the processor, although it has spent more than $2 billion on chip development to date. However, the move has already caused AMD’s shares to jump by over 6.5%.

As the AI market continues to grow and evolve, Microsoft’s partnership with AMD could drive the development of more innovative AI chips and processors.

What do you expect from this partnership moving forward, whether it’s soon or further down the road?
