Remember Intel’s ATX12VO standard? This standard, originally developed to replace the existing ATX standard, has seen very little to no uptake in the DIY market – though some progress has been made in the pre-built segments.

Here’s a refresher: the 12VO standard is designed to reduce cable clutter and improve efficiency, as it will replace the thick ATX 24-pin connector that encompasses virtually every DIY motherboard in existence. In its place will be a new 10-pin connector that occupies much less space (and has less difficulty bending it to the correct orientation). It’ll also do away with voltage conversions to 5V and 3.3V rails, leaving the voltage switching to the motherboard itself as needed.

HardwareLuxx revealed that MSI is planning to release two new products based on the new power supply standard. One of them is the PRO B650 12VO WIFI, a professional-focused model that runs on AMD’s Socket AM5 processors. It’s worth noting that the company previously released a similar model, albeit a low-end Intel H610-based one, with the same 12VO standard. Accompanying the motherboard is the new 12VO power supply unit (PSU) that uses this connector, and such designs help reduce complexity and cost.

Pokdepinion: The uptake for 12VO has been a lot slower than I thought, probably is going to take another 5 years before it becomes common.
