Tune Talk has a new mobile plan called Tune Talk Epik+ Family Safe, which is described as Malaysia’s “first family mobile plan with integrated one-tap parental control enforced entirely at the network level.” In other words, leave most of the online parental controls to the telco provider, as the network-level filtering takes care of it.

The launch timing is particularly important, given that Malaysia is taking considerations on restricting social media access for children under 16. “Parents are not looking to disconnect their children’s access; they want practical support to help them navigate digital life more safely,” the telco says. To that end, the new plan aims to help parents in keeping the online environment healthy for the kids, preferring guardrails over brute-force approaches that has so far seen notable pushbacks around the world.
Co-developed with Nokia, the plan is designed to address concerns raised in Tune Talk’s Family Digital Confidence Survey, which found that 48.1% of Malaysian parents ranked access to age-inappropriate content as their top online safety concern. More than 3 in 5 parents surveyed reported feeling unsure or lacking confidence in managing their child’s digital habits.
Epik+ Family Safe allows parents to manage parental controls on a network-level basis instead of on a per-app or per-device level. With one kid accessing, say, five social media apps, that’s five separate parental control options to manage (along with the system-level setting) – multiply that with the number of children per family, and you start to see this is simply impractical for most parents.
The protection system, consisting of three levels (low, medium, high) runs on Tune Talk’s network enforcement layer, blocking content across up to 56 categories, no matter the device or app involved. The plan covers one parent line and one child line – included in the RM80/month plan are 700GB of high-speed data with no Fair Usage Policy (FUP) restrictions and personal accident insurance coverage of up to RM500,000.
