Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that OpenAI, makers of the famed ChatGPT chatbot, is building a search engine with its AI know-how. Recently, the wraps have been taken off by the company to introduce its latest AI-powered product, called SearchGPT.
SearchGPT: Now In Prototype
The AI-powered search engine is still in early phase of development, and if you access the webpage right now (search.chatgpt.com), you’ll be greeted with a simple message to join the waitlist. Currently, only selected users can try this feature, which is said to provide user with “fast answers with clear and relevant sources.”
That being said, it looks like SearchGPT may not be a standalone product. In the blog post, the company states: “While this prototype is temporary, we plan to integrate the best of these features directly into ChatGPT in the future.” In its current form, the search-optimized AI does feature several features geared towards a typical search engine, though with a more conversational and graphical approach, coupled with relevant citations (useful for users to verify in case of hallucination).
Speaking of hallucinations (a term describing AI models generating incorrect information), there are already a few occasions reported in just a day since the service was open for limited testing. Not a good start – but given its limited testing nature, perhaps this is just early-stage issues to be ironed out before wider launch (or eventually integrated into ChatGPT).

Pokdepinion: I have doubts if hallucinations can be completely eliminated, especially when Model Collapse has been proven to be a real problem.
