Grab Makes Traveling Around Southeast Asia Easier Than Ever
Grab has announced new in-app travel innovations and partnerships designed to give travelers a safe, seamless, and hyperlocal experience as Southeast Asia welcomes back international tourists. According to the company, international tourist visits to Southeast Asia increased by 1,706% in 2022 compared to the previous year, and the company has seen a steady rebound in traveler numbers with rides to and from airports growing three times between January and December 2022.
No one knows Southeast Asia like we do, and our goal is not only to deliver the safest and most seamless mobility experience but also to encourage travelers to explore the richness of Southeast Asia like a local through our superapp offerings
Russell Cohen, Group Managing Director, Operations, Grab.
Their data shows that more than three-quarters of all international travelers using Grab in Malaysia are from other Southeast Asian countries. Outside of Southeast Asia, top source markets for travelers using Grab include North America, Australia, China, and South Korea.
The enhanced travel experience offers a range of new app features and enhancements, including the Traveler Homepage, which allows overseas travelers to explore a city within the Grab app as if they were at the destination, and is available for 33 of the top cities tourists visit in Southeast Asia. Grab has also made the app available in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese languages to deliver a more intuitive experience for travelers from China, Korea, and Japan.
In addition, the company is working on translating merchant menus in key cities across Indonesia, Vietnam, and Thailand into English and Chinese menu transitions across key Indonesian cities to help travelers explore the best local flavours around them. Other new features include a revamped Venues experience, providing image-based turn-by-turn walking directions to guide travelers through busy, unfamiliar airports and a currency converter feature that will automatically display fares in travelers’ preferred local currency.
Furthermore, they have partnered with some of the world’s most popular apps such as WeChat, AliPay, Ctrip, Kakao T, and Booking.com to provide travelers visiting Southeast Asia with options to access their ride-hailing services through platforms they already use and are familiar with. From Q2 2023, Uber users that open the app while in Southeast Asia will also see a message directing them to Grab as Uber’s recommended way to travel in the region.
Grab also announced new upgrades to its GrabUnlimited subscription package, giving members access to discounted airport rides at 89 airports across Southeast Asia. With these new features and partnerships, Grab aims to provide all travelers with the assurance and confidence to explore their destination safely and like a local.
Pokdepinion: I genuinely thought there would be extra charges when going around other countries, essentially in exchange for the convenience. Good to know that’s not the case but I hope it stays that way for a long time.
