In a bid to enhance user experience, WhatsApp is reportedly developing a new feature that enables file sharing between devices when they are in close proximity. Similar to Android Quick Share (formerly Nearby Share) and Apple’s AirDrop, this forthcoming feature is currently in the developmental phase and not yet available for beta testing.

The discovery was made in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.24.2.20, offering a glimpse of what users can expect once the feature is widely released. The functionality involves users searching for nearby contacts through the “People nearby” option. Both the sender and receiver need to have this option activated on WhatsApp to initiate the file transfer process. Additionally, users can shake their device to view incoming share requests.

Privacy remains a key focus, with the new feature ensuring end-to-end encryption for shared information and concealing user phone numbers. This design allows users to comfortably share files, even with individuals not on their contact list.

While the sharing mechanism might utilize cellular data, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth LE, and WebRTC for online and offline sharing, specific details about the system are yet to be confirmed. It remains unclear if the feature will impose any restrictions on file size, type, or quantity. As users eagerly await the official rollout, more details are anticipated to surface, providing a comprehensive look at WhatsApp’s innovative sharing system. Stay tuned for updates.
