That equates up to 60% file size reduction, says Google.

Android Can Now Archive Unused Apps To Save Space

Modern OSes has many ways to cut down resource usage, but this one from Android is an interesting one. Google is rolling out an ‘auto-archive‘ feature which, just like what it says, puts the unused apps in the backseat and removes extra data to save on space. However, personal data will remain, and should user needs to open the app again, the app will re-download its components back.

Google says this can save up to 60% of app’s file size, though this feature will require active listing in Google Play Store in order to enable this feature (meaning, if you can search the app, then it’s listed). Users will be prompted with this option when their devices are low on free space, and will be redirected to settings to review which apps are unused. iOS have similar feature back in 2017 (iOS 11), though it will be a lot more useful for Android devices since they come in different size and shapes – especially low-end devices.

Google claims that this feature will help developers retain its user base, as users will be less likely to remove the app completely from their devices and it will be more accessible should they need to return to the app once in a while.

Pokdepinion: While that sounds neat on paper, I’d imagine that would impact network usage still. Those on quota usage probably should just leave it as-is.
