Microsoft is set to expand its cloud infrastructure in Malaysia with the upcoming Southeast Asia 3 (SEA3) datacenter region in Johor Bahru. When operational, SEA3 will serve as Microsoft’s second cloud region in Malaysia, joining Malaysia West in Greater Kuala Lumpur, and is expected to grow into Microsoft’s largest cloud region across Southeast Asia.

SEA3 has been designed with sustainability as a core consideration. The facility will use closed-loop cooling and air-cooled chillers that eliminate water evaporation during the cooling process, significantly reducing reliance on local water resources. Backup generators will be designed to run on renewable biofuel to lower net carbon emissions. Microsoft-owned datacenters within the region will be built to achieve at minimum LEED Gold certification.

Malaysia West, which went live in May 2025 as Microsoft’s first cloud region in the country, currently offers close to 200 generally available services across three availability zones. With SEA3 coming online, organizations will be able to build multi-region architectures spanning two cloud regions entirely within Malaysia, while also tapping into Microsoft Azure’s broader global footprint.

“With Malaysia West in Greater Kuala Lumpur and Southeast Asia 3 coming soon in Johor Bahru, Malaysian organizations will have more choice in how they build, run, and scale cloud while advancing their AI innovation,” said Laurence Si, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia.

Pokdepinion: Johor Bahru is quietly becoming a serious tech hub.
