Not too long ago, we reported about the appointment of a new Malaysian Communications and Multimedia minister, Gobind Singh Deo, right here on Pokde.net. In the same article, we also reported about his plans on doubling the internet speed while also halving the price for internet access here in Malaysia very soon.
Unfortunately, we might not be getting that 50% price cut from Telekom Malaysia (TM) anytime soon.
The folks over at TM published a pricing structure for internet access on their website that did not seem to reflect what the MCMC suggested earlier. It’s clear that TM is not in agreement with this new mandatory standard on access pricing (MSAP). Gobind did mention that the MSAP will be coming in full force starting this week.
At the moment, he has promised a 25% price cut for retail broandband prices by end of this year with the reduct in the access pricing. It is also being said that TM, and possibly other providers, have only agreed to a 25% price cut in order to safeguard their income and mentioned that it will be tough to reduce it any further. For us to see the full 50% price cut, we may just have to wait for another year.
Of course, having cheaper internet access is just one thing but another important factor to consider is to maintain, if not improve to have a stable internet access experience. For this particular concern, Gobind Singh Deo mentioned that “there are no compromises to quality of broadband services and he needs a vigilant team to do constant checks.’’
We can expect new internet access packages later this year but keep in mind, it could either be with a price reduction, increased internet speed but with the same price, or possibly both. The second option will surely help providers such as TM to still maintain their source of revenue and minimize on potential losses.

Pokdepinion: Between having cheaper internet access or a free upgrade in speed, I’d honestly have a hard time choosing. Then again, my 30Mbps speed at home is more than enough for me and my family at the moment. How about you?

That is true. The only thing we got on that end is a vague answer, along the lines of they are currently working on improving that.

I would prefer a reduced price so that a lot more people can have access to internet connection. The 30 mbps at home is enough for me and my family.
Yeap, not everyone needs super high internet speeds anyway. Reduced prices would be enticing for plenty…assuming the connection is still stable of course :)
Impossible to expect a cheaper internet if internet service providers (ISP) are having lesser gross profit per area of land compared to Singapore where each plot of land are fully utilized with apartments/condos/flat making it easier for ISP to lower down the price due to easier maintenance. I suppose.
Oh man, paying excessively for Streamyx still pisses me off to the core but I don’t have any alternatives in my area so I’m pretty much stuck and screwed, as a lot of other people. Streamyx is still the main issue. People are paying 100mbps for TIME less than what we pay for max of 8mbps Streamyx. My internet is only 4mbps as that’s the max it can go. smh
I’m personally very surprised that there are people paying more for streamyx rather than unifi. of course i understand this is because they don’t have access to unifi but the idea that you actually have to pay more for that is insane.
Price is not the only measure for internet, overall there must be more internet provider to enhance service standards.

How can you live on 30Mbps at home? That’s blasphemy! 😂
well, it depends i suppose. if there’s not many people in the house, 30Mbps is still pretty good. if there’s more than 5 and each person has multiple devices, GGWP.
Dont forget streamyx user, upload speed is 512kbps for all streamyx package, so imagine the streamyx 8mbps users who paying rm160 for a 512kbps upload speed, IN 2018!
Relying on TM alone to give better bandwidth won’t solve the problem. Hopefully other providers could be given equal opportunity to supply better bandwidth. Telcos in Malaysia have this special clause called “best effort” services, i.e. I can get “guaranteed” bandwidth provided…. I have subscribed to unifi’s 30mbps line since it started to much of my dissatisfaction. But I believe one day there will be better broadband providers then what we have to rely on today.
So, what is Gobind Singh Deo is talking about? Total nonsense?

Telco svs VS Broadband Internet are two completely different biznes cases and the former is like so last century “analog” think while the latter is digital “bit” packets i.e. how you count “revenue” traffic is very very different la – its about time the Minister plus everyone at MCMC admits that – and restructure the whole local comms industry before we get invaded by foreign co’s that “get it” right!
